Tradegy In Japan + ABC Hobby Gambado

If you haven't heard there was a terrible earthquake in Japan last night. This was followed by a massive tsunami which preceded and aftershock and another tsunami. Japan got rocked. The population density of Japan means many many people were killed, hurt, or displaced by this event. I get sick thinking about how many lives have been lost. This is even painful for us since Japan was the birthplace of the RC touring car. Tamiya, Kyosho, Yokomo, and many others are based in Japan. I have no idea how our favorite manufacturers are doing. My prayers will be with everyone affected by this tragedy.

ABC Hobby does it yet again. I swear all they need to do is release a full color catalog and they might top the almighty Tamiya in awesomeness. This is a new FWD mini chassis called the Gambado. It is sick! It reminds me of the Tamiya M05 but cooler. Look at how the springs are separate from the shocks. I don't know if it's better but it is so much cooler. Of course this puppy will more than likely be close to the $200 mark so it gets beat by the M05 by a mile in the price department. It is also pre-assembled so there is another strike. All in all this puppy is a winner and full of more win than Charlie Sheen.

Normally I don't cover micro's. This one is different. It's a 1/10 scale version of a micro car. A little smaller than a mini, but certainly not a micro. The Mazda RX-3 Will Make You Cooler

So many of you have never seen these cars. This is for two reasons. The first is that they all rusted away to their molecular level and the other is that the few remaining ones have been kidnapped by Puerto Ricans. I can't complain because they take great care of them. Some are restored, some are drag racers, all are dope. I just lament the fact that I don't own one nor will I ever unless I marry into a family that has one. I hear the Filipino's on the west coast do the same thing. Apparently some cultures have always been aware of the virtues of small RWD imports. Despite the real ones being long gone we can still live vicariously through our models. That sounded less geeky in my head. Anyways, ABC Hobby has us covered.

I Did It For The Wheels

The 70's were awesome. You could sex without protection or worry, you could smoke on an airplane, you also didn't need 3 forms of ID and a cavity search to get on that airplane, chest hair was cool, You could buy a brand new Pontiac Trans Am, No one would give you crap about not returning emails or texts, and most importantly bras were optional. The 70's were also a time when we wanted to see people race any kind of car. Trans Am (not the car) was in full swing. Modified real cars battling it out across America (hence the name). They had two classes, one for the big 5.0 liter v8's and another for little cars around 2.0 liters. Datsun had the sweetest econmy car ever made in their showrooms back then. That car was the legendary 510. BRE campaigned a few of them back then but the most important part of their package were the wheels. American Racing's Libre. Those wheels have to be one of the coolest wheel designs of all time. They are simple yet distinctive. Over here on the east coast our Puerto Rican contingent affectionately named them "Pelona's" which translates as "car shoes". I have wanted a set but they are rare because they're really old and they crack easily. The few times I've found a set the owner did not want to part with them. They also don't come in stupid wide how I like them (My corolla is a work in progress). So this post is really about a new set of wheels that I don't know who manufactured and some pretty bodies.

ABC Hobby Loves The Unloved

Americans hated the Infiniti M30. I think it's a nice car but it wasn't fantastic. Main problem, it was built on the z31 300zx chassis. That chassis was amazing when it was introduced in 1984 but by the early nineties it was flimsy and underpowered. The car can be upgraded to be the car it was born to be but most are languishing on craigslist for sub $1000 prices. Of course when the drift dreamers see this body they will be inspired to buy these cars, gut the interiors, realize they don't have the money/skills to build it, and put it back on craigslist in worse shape for the same price. Ahh, the cycle of life.

In Japan this car was called the Nissan Leopard. It was available with a turbo. This is a beautiful body, which is par for the course for ABC Hobby. My only issue with them is how much these things cost. I just can't pay $50-$70 for a lexan body that is at some point going to be sliding down the street upside down at 30mph. Ok my silvercan touring cars don't do 30mph and don't crash that bad, but I'm still cheap.

More Wagon Love

There seems to be a trend. that trend is the end of 1/10 scale wagon bodies. Apparently ABC Hobby took this body off their site so maybe they're stopping production? I don't know for sure but if you want one you should get one while they are still around. I've liked the Legacy Wagon for a while now. I had a wicked hybrid one that I built for Gran Turismo's 1,2,3 (I'm still having trouble hybridding on GT4). I also had an experience driving one at triple digit speeds in the rain. However I still can't see myself owning one, well maybe a real one because this RC version looks killer!

ABC Hobby And My Light Fetish

I love auxiliary lighting on rally cars. A lot. I can still remember seeing my first set. they were on a Porsche 911 kitted up for rally. Emblazoned across the from were a magnificent rack of lights. My young mind couldn't understand why all cars didn't have this. The curved array on this car is just so sweet. Combine that with the beautiful Ralliart Graphics and you have this work of art.

ABC Hobby In Your Face with a Skyline

First of all, I finally got a Lancia Stratos body. Its the ABC Hobby version. I won it on the bay for less than $30. Yup I can feel your jealousy. ABC doean't have much info about it so I asked Google for some pics. Look.
